When you need to split a PDF
Splitting a PDF means taking one document and pulling out some of its pages, or breaking it into several smaller files. It is the opposite of merging. You might need it when:
- You only want to send page 3 of a long report, not all 40 pages.
- A signed contract page needs to go to someone, but the rest is private.
- A scanned book or bundle is one giant file and you want one file per chapter.
- A file is too big to email and you want to send it in parts.
Two ways to split
The Split PDF tool gives you two clear options:
- By page range. You type which pages you want, and the tool makes one new PDF from just those pages.
- One file per page. The tool turns every page into its own separate PDF. When there is more than one, they arrive together in a zip folder.
How to write a page range
Page ranges use commas and dashes. This sounds technical, but it is easy:
- 1-3 means pages 1, 2 and 3.
- 5 means just page 5.
- 1-3,5,8-10 means pages 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 9 and 10.
Spaces do not matter, so "1 - 3, 5" works the same way. This lets you pick exactly the pages you want in one go.
Step by step
- Open the Split PDF tool.
- Select the single PDF you want to split.
- Choose "page range" and type the pages you need, or choose "one file per page".
- Click the split button.
- Download your result. A single range comes as one PDF; many pages come as a zip.
Is my document private?

Tips for splitting cleanly
- Check the page numbers first. Open the PDF and note the exact pages you want before you type the range.
- Remember the count starts at 1. The first page is page 1, not page 0.
- Large files need memory. A huge scanned PDF uses more of your device's memory, so close other tabs if things slow down.
- Zip files are normal. When you split into many pages, your browser gives you one zip. Open it to find each page inside.
Splitting versus compressing
People often split a PDF because it is too big to email. Splitting helps, but if the whole document needs to stay together, it is often better to shrink it instead. In that case use Compress PDF, which reduces the file size without removing pages. And if you later want to join pages back together, Merge PDF does that.
A quick example
